Using Facebook Milestones to Tell Your Story and Legacy
We love Facebook Milestones for Facebook Pages. For brands who have some history, it is a wonderful way in which to tell your story.
Here are a few things to consider
- Milestones work best when they are accompanied by strong visuals. If you do not have an appropriate graphic that tells the milestone story, any visual that contains the essence of the milestone is often better than no visual. Just make sure you have the rights to publish it.
- The milestone heading is important. It needs to grab attention and provide immediate context to the visual.
- The description is an idea place to insert your keywords and direct both the narrative and conversation around your brand, as well as improve your search visibility.
- Milestones are not a competition to see who can remember the most and add in every single detail. It is important to think through the following:
- Who are your audiences?
- What are you wanting to achieve?
- What story are you wanting to tell?
- What are your calls to action?
Milestones provide a chance for you to showcase your brands legacy and heritage, providing a level of affiliation, trust and assurance. Have fun and take pride in creating your brands milestones on Facebook as this will shine through.
Do you know of any brands who have used Facebook Page Milestones to good effect? Post them, or your own brands in the comments below.

Facebook has created a wonderful new opportunity for you to share your creative business on a more personal level with their new Timeline for Pages. They have devised a system for sharing the history of your business with the assistance of milestones and photographs. By using milestones along your new Timeline, you can create a sense of telling a story. Your audience will have the opportunity to see how your Etsy business has grown and changed over time by the milestones you choose.
I love it when a brand I like has a great timeline. I have to be honest, I’m such a sucker when a brand draws on its legacy and heritage, it really pulls me into the brand and actually increases my loyalty. Like you said the visuals are key, sumptous strong images really attract my attention. One of my favourite timelines is from House of Fraser http://www.facebook.com/houseoffraser?ref=ts. The timeline dates back to 1849 and has some great shots of old window displays and fashion shows.
The Facebook Milestones are brilliant way to increase knowledge and engagement around your brand. Given that they are used in the right way (as described above) with visuals and a meaningful narrative they draw attention to your brand legacy and increase potential following. Facebook Milestones are being used effectively by a wide range of actors on the social networking site. From big name brands such as Prada to development organisations such as Oxfam. People are increasingly recognising the value of the milestone story. One Facebook Milestone that appealed to me was the World Bank’s as they had made effective use of their timeline, which contained visuals and a narrative that mould into the Banks history and current agenda.

Thanks for stopping by Tane.
The World banks Facebook page is really well done. Thanks for sharing it. Love the fact they recognize it is a visual medium and they have kept their facts succinct and to the point.
The Milestone feature is truly remarkable indeed. its surprising how some Brands aren’t implementing this feature into their profiles as this can be a great tool for developing and strengthening loyalty among users. I’d like to think of it as making history with the brand, which is why when I think of brands that have used Milestones for good effect I think of Coca-Cola http://www.facebook.com/cocacola?ref=ts
P.S Alexandra I don’t know if you noticed this, but on House of Fraser’s Milestones, their founding year appears to be incorrect. On bold the year says 1849, however, the statement below that states 1894.
I echo Alexandra, I am a huge sucker for brands that have a well developed legacy! I recently saw that The Ellen DeGeneres Show did a wonderful job at adding all of their history making events. She cracks me up by listing that it started in 1881 and her love for JCPenny’s begins in 1955! It’s the attention to details that makes a normal brand go to an extraordinary brand.
